Black truffle hunting in Bagnoli

An adventure in the forests of Irpinia in search of the precious black gold, followed by a tasting of local dishes prepared with this regional excellence.

The Nero di Bagnoli (Black of Bagnoli): this is how they call the truffle that lives, solitary and reserved, underground, among the pine and beech forests surrounding Lake Laceno in the municipality of Bagnoli Irpino, in Campania.

Under the watchful eyes of owls and marmots, Lorenzo, a young and passionate truffle hunter, together with his tireless four-legged companions, continues the search for this precious fungus, considered the crowning jewel of local cuisine.

As soon as the dogs get excited, kicking up dust and soil all around them and wagging their tails in celebration, it means one thing: the treasure is near, just a step away—now it’s time to dig! And of course, then it’s time to savor the reward, because the fruits of such effort yield a delicious plate of fettuccine or ravioli with pecorino cheese, butter, sage, and truffle, or a slice of warm caciocavallo cheese topped with a generous grating of this gem, with its hard exterior and delicate flavor.

But searching for the Irpinian truffle also means walking along the trails that surround Lake Laceno, exploring nature, and admiring the landscape. In this part of Campania, the characteristics of the mountains are all present: dense forests, cool or crisp temperatures depending on the season, and charming villages with narrow streets and noble castles that can be reached in just a few kilometers.
