The intensity of white and the brilliance of green grab in the heart of the Baronìa, the eastern area of center Sardinia. Here we can see the calcareous rocks, the scents of the mediterranean vegetation, the great valley between Galtellì and Orosei.
We are on the top of Mount Tuttavista, overlooking the province of Nuoro, in one of the wildest areas of Sardinia. Deep in this stillness, we get seduced by the beauty of the backcountry, the harshness of the landscape, the karstic caves, a paradise for walkers, speleologists and paleontologists. How many animals took refuge in these ancient, cold cavities, which today smell of juniper and lentisco? The ravens circle over the holm oaks, under a sky that looks made of cotton candy.
Simone, our guide, crosses the paths with the confidence of someone who knows every secret. The mistral moves the shrubs, it seems to smell the scent of the sea, yet we are eight hundred meters high. With backpacks on our shoulders, we follow Simone with a clear goal: to reach the bronze statue of Christ by the Madrid sculptor Pedro Angel Terron Manrique, which stands on the Tuttavista, almost as a reward for those who finally reach the summit. Twelve meters high, visible already in the distance, Manrique's work is the reproduction of the most holy Crucifix of the church of Galtellì, recently awarded with the “authentic village of Italy” plaque.
Mount Tuttavista is a meeting place. Speleologists, walkers, pilgrims, climbing enthusiasts, botanists, lovers of adventure and travel: for those arriving in the Nuoro area, it is an almost inevitable destination. Here, on the top of the king of Baronìa, every trouble is far away. Only beauty is within reach.
