The ancient Roman gates give the town of Nepi so ancient an air that when you cross them it seems to take a step back in time.
The slow and silent pace of life and the almost absence of car noises help the imagination. Right in the center of the village flows the Cavaterra waterfall, which has a very strong jet thanks to the resistance of the peperino marble of the escarpment.
Nepi is a small jewel of Tuscia, famous for its walls and for its water with a slightly sparkling flavor. But it is by leaving the village behind and exploring the surrounding nature that you discover a real hidden paradise: the Picchio waterfall.
Twelve kilometers of adventure and wild nature. The dense and shady wood allows a few rays to filter through, creating reflections on the dusty path. Wooden bridges reminiscent of adventure films. The waters of the Tasso spring are the soundtrack to the long walk and even hearing them means enjoying freshness. The fords allow you to pass from one bank to the other, but always being a little in the balance.
They are all the ingredients for the adventure to be worthy of the name. You walk, climb, go down, cross the stream, yet the waterfall never arrives. The intensity of the sound of the water this time does not measure the distance, because after the third ford comes silence.
Everything seems static. Only a magpie flies from one tree to another and it is hard to even recognize it. You cross another small portion of the forest almost with the feeling of having taken the wrong road, until a large boulder with a rope suggests that perhaps the destination is not so far away.
And then the water begins to play again, slowly growing in intensity, until the Picchio waterfall finally appears in a sort of natural amphitheater, with its long and powerful jump and its scenic beauty.
