Autumn at the lake

Autumn at the lake Autumn at the lake

In the middle of autumn the lake Decorata has something dreamlike. Silence is inscrutable, nature is almost motionless, as if it had fallen into a deep sleep.

The surrounding hills are silent, hidden in the fog. The echo in the distance is more like the howling of wolves than the barking of dogs. The October rain awakened the scents of the land, the undergrowth smells of moss and wild mushrooms. The plumbeous sky is reflected in the deep green of the water, leaving a trail of shimmering silver.

Even the trees with yellowed branches are reflected in the young lake, born in the seventies of the last century in the village of the same name, the oldest in the municipality of Colle Sannita, just eight kilometers away. And the geese play hide-and-seek, but in silence. It is an impenetrable stillness around the Decorata lake.

Under the green blanket of the water, carps, even of good size, trenches, trouts and rare pikes. Sports fishing enthusiasts come here from the other villages of Campania, from the nearby Molise and even from Puglia, which is just thirty kilometers away, taking advantage of the particular quality of the waters and the right seasons, before the lake freezes and the frigid cold of these areas put a white veil over the whole landscape.

In spring, the picnic areas around the lake are crowded with adults and children who in Decorata can enjoy a bit of freedom, away from the noise and unnatural rhythms of the cities. Those who love walking, on the other hand, have more than fifty hectares available of wild and dense wood, where firs, pines, turkey oaks, chestnuts, hornbeams and some solitary oak pose in all their beauty.

Decorata is a forest full of surprises. The juicy blackberries hidden among the brambles along the paths tell you about a hot season that has just ended. The round and red strawberry grows among the shrubs, together with the carpet of tired and aged leaves, instead tell us of an autumn that has just begun.

Those who miss Christmas and its atmospheres can find at Decorata the same intimate and welcoming feeling as early as October, when the chestnuts harvest begins and from the vineyards the scent of must and grape harvest rises.
